The Challenge:

An Arlington county-based Not-For-Profit association wanted to increase its awareness in the community, diversify and expand its membership and modernize its communications with the public.

The DNS Solution:

The majority of the association’s membership was over age 55 and the primary communications vehicles were mailed quarterly newsletters and periodic telephone communications. DNS quickly realized that fresh marketing and communications strategies would have to be implemented to attract a younger membership through an analysis of the marketplace and working with the executive Board. Leveraging the organization’s 25th Anniversary as a platform to attract new members and re-engage the existing membership, DNS rebranded the quarterly publication and implemented an online marketing campaign targeted to various population segments to attract new members.

The Result:

DNS created a communications plan that included successfully transforming the black and white publication to a full color newsletter with clear call to actions and a dedicated section for upcoming events that appealed to the new target demographic as well as the current demographic. The quarterly newsletter was converted to an electronic version and sent via email lists that were created by DNS. The lists were segmented based on members’ age, ethnicity, activity preference, and interest and also included other contacts who would have an interest in the association. The result was a significant increase in readership and interest in the association, which ultimately increased membership numbers and diversity.
